To qualify for police maternity pay you need 63 weeks' continuous service at the start of the week your baby is due. Your force may ask you to return for at least a month or repay the pay above SMP.
Police officers in England and Wales get 26 weeks of full pay (reduced by any Statutory Maternity Pay, so the total is your full pay), then 13 weeks of SMP. This increased from 18 weeks in January 2021. You can choose to take half pay in weeks 22 to 31 instead of full pay in weeks 22 to 26, which this calculator does not show.
Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is available to most employees as long as they earn on average at least £129 per week. It is paid at 90% of your average weekly earnings for the first 6 weeks, then £194.32 per week, or 90% of your earnings if that is lower, for 33 weeks. Check if you qualify on GOV.UK.
From Monday 6 April 2026, Statutory Maternity Pay increases from £187.18 to £194.32 per week.
